Colorado, also known as “Black Mamba”, is a psychotropic drug that has rapidly gained popularity and has become a newfound love among posing a lot of health risks and even death. Colorado or Black Mamba is a drug made from synthetic plant, they contain heavy metals which are laced with chemicals not suitable for human consumption, is then mixed with weed, the drug is known as “Spike” in the U.S, so Spike plus weed equals to Colorado.
Colorado, according to drug experts, is dangerous substance smoked by youths to enliven their spirit and get intoxicated, most times leading to insanity. Colorado has swept across the country with a street lingo known as “Colors”. On social media, there are several videos of Nigerian youths reacting violently after using the drug using the phrase “on colors”, meaning a person acting under the influence of Colorado drug.
The use of synthetic cannabinoids has been associated with wide range of health risks and adverse effects. Each batch of Colorado has a different chemical compound as scientists continue to experiment to remain technically legal, this is why people experience different highs because it’s not the same thing. Effects span across difficulty in breathing, hallucinations, increased blood pressure, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizures, paranoia, anxiety, unconsciousness, kidney failures, psychosis, causes mental episodes and a zombie-like-intoxication which can lead to numbness, shakes, sweats, and even death.
To curb the growing use of Colorado drug among the Nigerian youths, implementing a multi-faceted approach is essential. Creating maximum awareness about the dangers and health risks associated with the use of this drug is crucial. It is clear that Colorado contains chemicals that can have long term damaging health effects. The safest recourse is to avoid it and other related banned substances entirely. Also, creating stricter regulations and enforcement measures to stop its production, distribution and sale in the country is important
Additionally, providing the Nigerian youths with accessible and affordable mental health services is crucial in curbing the underlying factors contributing to the use of Colorado drug. Therapy, counseling, and support groups can help the youth in overcoming addition and managing the mental health issues associated with the use of Colorado drug.
Furthermore, creation of rehabilitation centers and treatment programs designed specially for Colorado drug addition can also help create a pathway to recovery for affected youths.
The effects and health challenges associated with the use of Colorado drug on Nigerian youths is a growing concern that need immediate attention. The physical and mental health implications of Colorado drug use pose a serious risk to the total well being of the Nigerian youths, through the use of a multi-faceted approach which includes, awareness, stricter regulations and creation of accessible mental health services, Nigeria can curb the growing impact of Colorado drug on the youths. It is necessary for government agencies, educators, parents, and healthcare professionals to work together towards ensuring a healthier and Colorado drug free country.
