There was palpable tension at the Kogi State Nigeria Union of Journalists Press Centre, Lokoja on Saturday as men of the Nigeria Police belonging to the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS) clashed with some local vigilante over right to arrest a person in the press centre.
It was reliably gathered that the vigilante group numbering about 20 came in two hilux vans and entered the NUJ press centre creating panic among residents in the area.
It was also learned that they are in the state capital under the instructions of their commander to arrest a yet to be identified person.
Few minutes later after the local vigilante all position their self to execute their mission, the SARS numbering about 5 disrupted their operation just as one of the SARS officers was over-heard saying “nobody gave them the licence to operate in the area.”
“Most of you are not well trained, and you think you can come here and do what you like, we won’t accept that. You will all follow us to our station now”, the leader of the SARS stated.
Argument continued to ensued between both parties as the SARS men instructed the local vigilante to drop their riffles.
At about 6:58pm, the local vigilante were disarmed and they were taken to A Police division in Lokoja for questioning.
Some of the ammunitions seized from them are dane guns and pump action rifles.
It was however gathered that the arrest of the vigilante was at the behest of the State Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu following tip-off of the arrival of the vigilante group.
