The recent decision by the government to reintroduce school fees in institutions of higher learning as from this educational session has expectedly generated much criticisms and debates from both the public sectors and the academicians.
For one to constructively criticize this government policy, he has to look at both sides of the situation. On one hand, the government has for a long time carried the burden of educating the people of the country since independence almost singly-handedly.
On the other hand, the majority of the citizens of this country are not opportune to carry the burden of education of their children from the primary to the university level.
We feel that the government should seriously reconsider this decision in view of the fact that so many parents will as a result of this decision withdraw their spouses from the institution of learning. Therefore, defeating the essence of education is something the government is constantly after.
What we propose for the government to do is cut down the amount of money the students are supposed to pay for a session since the economy has picked up considerably.
