I read this story on The Nation Newspaper of Friday 27th May, 2016 edition of the publication with dismay, I put call across to one of the lecturer of the institution in the course of our conversation, he noticed the pain in my voice and told me that the forty (40) on the publication were those that left formally while reasonable numbers of them have gone even without notification.
As at this moment, over fifty (50) lecturers of the institution has bid farewell to the students unceremoniously, my findings revealed that the state government has placed the lecturers in same Condition of Service with the Local and State Civil Servants. Unfortunately, both the teaching and non teaching staff of the institution received last the salary of December 2015, till this moment non of the 2016 salaries were paid while lofty opportunities are out there even with ten percent (10%) bonus ahead in some of the newly established institutions of high learning in other states.
My worry is that, if the situation is not been look into as urgent as possible before the next phase of National University Commission (NUC) accreditation exercise am afraid the institution might become history. I could remember similar scenario in one of the State University were students were ported to another school of higher learning for not be able to meet up with the necessary requirements for accreditation and recently some faculties of Benue and Delta State Universities were denied/withdraw accreditation while that of Enugu State University of Technology was to be totally shutdown all of same premises.
It’s unfortunate, that the Board of Governing Council of the institution (KSU) seems to be silent on this critical and serious matter and even the Kogi State University old Students Association are not actually up and doing in the Alma mater that made them who they are today.
It’s only the Accademic Staff Union of University (ASUU) that are currently crying out loud and it necessary we all need to be involved at least for the sake of humanity, our children, our generation and our state.
I want to use this medium to crave for your indulgence, the Executive Governor of Kogi State, the State Ministry of Education and all his surrogate to look into this issue with kin interest to find an urgent/lasting measure to ameliorate this problem in order to avert this impending danger as it affect the students, the state and her citizens such measure should be applicable to all Higher institutions owned by the state.
Just my view…
Yours Sule Isa Akagwu Kpaleko
