As the Nigerian National Assembly okays autonomy for local government areas across the 774 local governments in the country, the member representing Ankpa 2 constituency at the Kogi state house of assembly, Alh. Alfa Momoh Rabiu has hailed the National Assembly saying the amendment is a mile stone achievement for Nigeria and the eight national assembly.
In his reaction shortly after the end of Tuesday National Assembly plenary, he expressed confidence that the bill shall have a ratification when sent to states house of assemblies adding that the move to now create office of the auditor general of local government as well as state local government service commission will give room for a transparent and accountable local government administration.
In his words, “I want to first of all congratulate the Nigerian eight national assembly as this amendment is a historic one and they shall be remembered in time to come by it. Even though it will still go through proceedings at the various states house of assembly, I’m confident that the bill shall be ratified. What is however significant is the creation of auditor general of local government and local government service commission for that would cub executive recklessness once the amendment is fully implemented,” he said
It will be recalled that both both chambers had through a conference committee harmonised versions of the amendments into the constitution and subsequently ratified twenty-three clauses and sections which as part of its provisions deleted the State Independent Electoral Commission vesting the powers to conduct council elections to the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Also worthy of note is the provision that now allows for independent candidacy as a result of amendments made to section 65 and 106 of the 1999 constitution.
