“Education is the best legacy any government can give to her citizen, and as such, the importance of education as a key to manpower development and socio-economic growth in any given society cannot be overemphasized.”

It was on this premise that the Member representing Ankpa 1 State Constituency at the Kogi State House of Assembly, Hon Ahmed Muhammed in a motion on the Wednesday plenary asked the government to declare a state of emergency on all public schools in the state.
Muhammed decried amongst other ills, the teaching environment in the government-owned schools which he described as not conducive as buildings have totally collapsed and eaten up by overgrown weeds.

“The state of our Public Schools in Kogi State is nothing to write home about. Our Public Schools which was a toast in its hay days is now an eyesore. Schools that have produced lots of very prominent persons to the society now lack facilities.

“Dilapidated blocks of classrooms, broken doors, windows, scruffy chalkboards and no recreational facilities for students, and it is said to be responsible for the recent fall in the academic performance of the students, significant fall of students population and candidates for external examination,” he highlighted.

The lawmaker called for an urgent attention on the schools, a review of the academic curriculum, provision of adequate academic resources, and an on the spot assessment by the Committee on Education.
