Our great party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Kogi State, has noted with great displeasure the present destruction of the educational system by the APC–led administration in the state. The actions and inactions of the state government concerning the crisis in the education sector in the state are condemnable.
It is no longer news that all the tertiary institutions in Kogi State have been on industrial action for over five months without any solution to the crisis that led to the action by the staff of the institutions. Without doubt, the present government in the state is not only visionless but also has no direction. It is safe to conclude that the state is heading for the rocks if for over five months the government in power failed in its responsibility to proffer solution to the crisis in the education sector.
Kogi State is renowned for education as its main industry that the founding fathers of the state leveraged on at its creation to place it on a solid foundation. The people of the state are found in every field of human endeavour and all walks of life as a result of their educational attainment coupled with their industry at work. It is, therefore, unfortunate that our dear state is being turned to an educationally backward state as a result of the cluelessness of the present government in the state. A government that allows all the tertiary institutions in the state to be closed for over five months is not worth its onions.
Our party condemns in totality the arrest, harassment and intimidation of students by security agencies, acting on the instruction on the Yahaya Bello-led government. The saying that you cannot beat a child and tell him not to cry is apt here. Students of tertiary institutions are entitled to peaceful protest to register their displeasure over the continued shut down of their institutions. We expect the government to be sensitive to its responsibilities. The need for the tertiary institutions in Kogi State to be opened for resumption of academic programmes cannot be over-emphasised. The government should do the needful by addressing the grievances of the staff of the tertiary institutions.
Meanwhile, the PDP in the state empathises with the workers who are undergoing an excruciating period as a result of the non-payment of their salaries for over one and a half years, especially on the occasion of this year’s Workers’ Day. As you endure this period, it is our prayers that the good Lord will take control in the affairs of Kogi state.
