Empowerment: Possible Means the State Government can Get Its People Empowered – By Comrade Gideon Ayodele

In a conference by Kogi Youth Power Shift (KYPS) agitators tagged: Way Forward for the Present Administration.

Empowerment refers to measures designed to increase the degree of autonomy and self-determination in people and in communities in order to enable them to represent their interests in a responsible and self-determined way, acting on their own authority.

The word, empowerment, is used on everyday life of people. Youth empowerment is beyond these two. In this write-up, youth empowerment is grouped into five which are: Financial youth empowerment, skills acquisition youth empowerment, academic youth empowerment, moral youth empowerment, and Agricultural youth empowerment. These classifications are to enhance readers understanding about youth empowerment.

* Youth Empowerment & Skills Training Program
Goal: To empower youth and women to improve their livelihood through skills training and income generation activities.

Strategies:
a. Establish new Vocational training centers and improve the capacity of the existing ones
b. Establish family life education centers
c. Support activities aimed at improving employment opportunities for trained graduates
d. Put in places mechanisms that will improve future sustainability of vocational training centers
e.Improve linkage with other Skills/ Vocational training Centers for cross learning and experience sharing

Program Objectives:
a. Equip vulnerable youth with marketable skills

b. Support activities aimed at improving employment opportunities for the youth. This program provides the following Trade skills:

a. Computer skills b. Electronics Repair c. Solar panels installation, maintenance and repair d. Masonry e. Tailoring/Knitting f. Food processing g. Office management h. Plumbing i. Auto mechanicย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  ย  j. Literacy/Numeracyย  k. Carpentry l. Metal work.

Objective 1: Equip target group with marketable skills
Activities:
Training: Computer literate and application; Electricity; Tailoring; Metal work; Solar power application; Carpentry; Food processing; Mechanics; Arts; Improved cooking stoves; Electronic equipment (computers, printers, mobile phones etc); Shoe making; IT (computer education); Hair cutting; Office management (especially for women); Masonry.

Establishing new training centers, including coordination mechanisms with other actors.
Knowledge skills transfer.

Capacity building for staff, recruit skilled (graduated) instructors and buy new machines.
Reviewing of curriculum and upgrading level of trainings (to a higher level).

Exposure visits.

Objective 2: Support activities aimed at improving employment opportunities for trained graduates
Activities:

Career planning with graduates
Contact governmental institutions and private companies with the aim of securing employment opportunities for graduates and enhancing self-employment activities
Establishing cooperatives activities
Provide graduates with starting toolkit

Objective 3: Put in place mechanism that will improve future sustainability of VTC (Vocational Training Centres)
Develop clear strategy to maintain sustainability (incl. marketing the products of the center and recruitment of new instructors), plus maintenance of contact with enterprise.

It is therefore believed that if the STATE GOVERNMENT can begin to work in this direction, joblessness and poverty will be a thing of the past in our dear state.
