The Unfolding political dynamics in Nigeria today suggest that the most realistic option available to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential election may be to adopt President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their presidential candidate.

A careful look at recent political developments shows that President Tinubu has mastered the complexities of Nigerian politics over the years and is now applying that experience effectively. Across the country, many political actors including members of the opposition are aligning with him due to his leadership style, political reach, and the opportunities presented by his Renewed Hope Agenda.

Today, several PDP governors and political leaders are either openly collaborating with the federal government or maintaining strategic relationships with the presidency. As things stand, only a few governors, such as Bala Muhammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, are widely viewed as remaining firmly within the core opposition bloc.

At the National Assembly level, the President’s influence is also evident, with many lawmakers maintaining cordial and cooperative relationships with his administration. This growing political alignment demonstrates the strength of the President’s political network across party lines.

Unlike past eras when federal power was sometimes used to suppress opposition, the current administration has focused more on building partnerships, strengthening political relationships, and advancing national development programs. President Tinubu has consistently projected himself as a leader for all Nigerians, avoiding divisive religious or regional politics.

Given these realities, it may be politically wise for opposition figures, including leaders like Atiku Abubakar and others from the North, to reconsider their ambitions and allow the southern presidency under Tinubu to complete its tenure.

Smaller parties such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) also face significant structural limitations, particularly the absence of strong nationwide political structures and sitting governors capable of mobilizing support across the federation.

In practical political terms, the PDP may find it more strategic to negotiate and align politically possibly through influential figures like Nyesom Wike and others rather than attempt a direct confrontation in 2027.

Politics often rewards realism over sentiment. As the 2027 election approaches, the PDP must carefully assess the political landscape and decide whether adopting Tinubu as their presidential candidate could be the most pragmatic path forward.
