The Owe people of Kabba/Bunu Local government area of Kogi West on Saturdays celebrated the 2018 Kabba Cultural Festival with calls for Government to ensure it is listed among national festivals for its tourism potentials to be harnessed.
This come from barely two weeks after the coronation of the new Obaro of Kabba, and Chairman Okun Traditional Council, Oba Solomon Dele Owoniyi, (Obaro Otitoleke Oweyomade 1) and being his first official engagement the people were ecstatic to witness the enhanced face of Owe unity as enunciated by his ascendancy to the throne.
The festival with the theme: ‘Evolving the new face of unity’ is perceived as a celebration and festival of cultural heritage beyond comparison.
The Obaro listed the Aruta, Agbelegbe cultural heritage along with the Obangogo hill mountain climbing as area the FG should look into.
Secretary to Kogi State Government,Mrs. Folashade Ayoade who represented the Governor said the people place so much premium on their culture and tradition as they are weary of the negative influence of western culture.
“We would not want our culture to be subsumed by the western culture. We always set a day like this aside to showcase our culture because we value where we are coming from.
“The state Government is working hard to ensure it utilizes it’s tourism potentials to turn around the State Economy. The state executive council approved for the renovation of the various tourists centers in the State and very soon the tourists centers would be there for every one to come and savor in the State.”
Continuing she said when there is improvement in tourism a lot of revenue would be generated from it as it will attract both local and international visitors to the State thereby boosting the economy.
The special adviser to the Governor on security Jerry Omodara said Culture has become so important to the Kogi State Government and that is why the Government has decided to partner with the people to promote the culture and tradition of the Okun people especially with the existing peace in Kabba and the State.
He said Kabba Day is a festival every body look up to because of its significant importance to the Owe and Okun people and Kabba being the headquarters of the Kogi West senatorial district.
The commissioner if Agriculture, Kehinde Oloruntoba called on the organizers of Kabba Day to collaborate with Kogi State Government via the ministry of Culture and Tourism so that the day can be listed in the National calendar to draw people from far and near to come visit the historic sites and help upstage the celebration.
The member representing Kabba/Bunu federal constituency Tajudeen Yusuf said “Tourism is the way to go, it is a money spinning thing, when the State can strike the right chord everything would fall in line.”
While the President General of the Kabba Development Union (KDU), Engr. Emmanuel Ajibero commended the people of the community for their determination to continue to contribute to the development of the community.
He said the festival is basically set up to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Kabba people.
