Obinrin Kegun Mountaineering Carnival is been observed in Mopa, Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The name ‘Obirin Kegun’ is of Yagba dialect which literally means; ‘one with a feminine mind cannot mount’.
The name is just an expression of how strenuous and fearful climbing the mountain can be.
For more than 10 years now, it has become a yearly tourist attracting Carnival.
It is interesting to know that the mountain top is as flat as lowland, this unique feature makes it liveable and different from other regular mountains.
Such feature is common to Mopamuro mountains which made it liveable for majority of our ancestors who lived on them as fortified refuge during the slave raiding era of Nupe and Ibadan warriors.
The Obirin Kegun Carnival is now a yearly programme garnished with lots of social and entertaining activities under the aegis of Mopa Elite Club without any form of Government intervention either at local, state or federal level.
The Carnival has become a sort of rallying point particularly for youths who troops in from different parts of the country and the world, thereby increasing the rate of socio-economic activities and networking during the period.
The advantage of the Tourist Attracting Carnival is immeasurable if given the necessary attention from the Government, her agencies and other relevant bodies.
The 2017 Obirin Kegun Carnival is scheduled for 29th and 30th of December, 2017.
