The news of the press conference granted by the Senate Committee Chairman on FCT, Mr Dino Melaye had hit the airwaves like thunderbolt with a consequent multi-perspective reactions from opinionated Kogites. I woke up this morning with a resolve to add my voice to the continued remarks that have greeted the recent outburst of my controversial Senator.
It is only cultural in our political construct for a politician that has risen to the height of a Senator to enjoy intimidating cult followership and royalties from godsons. It’s also heart warming to see our Abuja based politicians coming back home to defend the rights of their constituents and perhaps statesmen. However, such is not achieved out of desperation and noisemaking.
For starters, Mr Dino Melaye is one of the youngest political officers in Nigeria who has climbed the ladder of fame through careless display of affluence, youthful exorbitant lifestyle and ceaseless vituperation which are characteristic of a gangster. He (Dino) is a newsmaker per excellence however, egbon must be thankful to fortune and the wind of ‘chanji’ that blew him to his present undeserving office.
The memoir of my first encounter with egbon Dino will remain fresh, i was just a 400 level student functioning as the Gen Secretary of National Association of Okun Students (NAOS), uni Abuja chapter when we approached our then House of Rep member to grace our annual event. Egbon was a PGD student back then in Uni Abuja. He was notorious for blasting around the campus in his many assorted toys. On that fateful day, Hon Dino Melaye was sited infront of his lecture hall hitting his steering and dancing without caution to “i wan kill Timaya…i wan finish Timaya”, for those of us that are still familiar with that secular music. After presenting our proposal to the ‘honourable’, he responded by handing over a thousand naira to my president and he said “Mr President, this money is for you guys to buy CONDOM, I’ll see you some other time”.. Well, that was our last encounter with him in university of Abuja.
Back to the issue in the public domain, one thing is clear from Sen Dino Melaye’s meeting with other coup plotters – struggle to get relevance and quest to control the GYB led government.. Let this message get to him that; it will be easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a champagne quaffing, wife beating and lamborghini displaying public officer to be the godfather of our governor. Infact, it’s an insult on the collective sensibility of the entire Kogites for him to dream of such.
The God that voted GYB into lugard house as affirmed by egbon on the 27th of January last year is still very much alive to complete the good work he has started in Kogi state.
Egbon has 3 options to choose from – stop acting unpopular scripts and support the change that has come to stay in Kogi state, continue living his flamboyant life in Abuja while we approach 2019 or better still carry his uncontrolled appetite for relevance to Kwara state, perhaps Gov Ahmed Fatai may be willing to play to his gallery.
