The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secured a vital court ruling yesterday to bring to an end the crisis bedeviling the party since she left office in 2015 after ruling Nigeria for 16 solid years.
The defeat caused a commotion in the party, sending many of the party leaders and supporters alike to the now ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). This shock lingered for too long which resulted to division in the party with Ahmed Makarfi chosen as the acceptable leader of the party by most of the party faithful against the Modu Sheriff’s led group.
With all this coming to an end after the supreme court judgement affirming Ahmed Makarfi the popular choice as the party leader and both parties agreeing to sheath their sword and work for the progress of the party to reclaim her lost glory, what should readily come to mind is questions.
This questions should border on what led to the downfall of the party in 2015 election?
Since the party is now talking of restructuring, are they ready to truly give power back to the people?
1. The cardinal point that led to the party’s defeat in the last election was the imposition of candidates. The impose unpopular candidates to fly the party’s ticket against popular candidates. Is the party now ready to allow popular opinion to prevail over few interest of some selfish leaders?
2. There become too much of corrupt leaders who think more about themselves other than the collective interest of the masses. This, put the integrity of the country into serious questioning. Are this people now ready to have a change of heart?
3. The people was taken for granted. Forgetting their own slogan of the “Power to the People”. Are they now ready to accept that Power truly belong to the people?
4. The ideology of the Party was thrown to the dustbin to pursue personal interest. Are they now ready to go back to the drawing board?
5. What can they offer of they are voted in again to lead the country?
6. The people are demanding for Youth participate in governance, are the ready to give the youth as now matured and ready to govern by giving them the chance?
The country at the moment in serious crisis because of the kindergarten and obsolete mode of governance of the ruling APC. What she needed now is a focused and directional leadership that can push her out of the mud she is presently plunged to by this government.
The people has become more politically conscious, ready to ask questions before choosing their leaders, we made the mistake in 2015 and put our selves in “chains” we won’t make same again.
Giving what happened recently in Osun State, party affiliation is gradually giving way for credible, transparent and competent candidacy.
The PDP must present the People’s best eleven to fly the party’s flag in elections going forward otherwise, whatever happens to them will be their own stories to tell.
I wish the party to happy, directional and purposeful reformation.
