Open Letter to the Honourable Commissioner for Education,
Hon. Wemi Jones

Sir,

I appeal to your conscience and your responsibility as the Commissioner for Education to urgently attend to the decaying and unhealthy structures of St. Peter’s College, Egbe.

A school should be a sanctuary of learning, not a place where children sit daily under the threat of collapsing walls and leaking roofs. What exists there today is not only an embarrassment to governance, but a danger to life.

Sir, one cannot lead from a distance. You have been given the trust of overseeing education across the 21 Local Government Areas of this State, yet many schools remain in ruins, crying out for reconstruction.

Why has there been no comprehensive tour by your office to see firsthand the reality in these public schools? Leadership requires presence, inspection, and direct knowledge of the conditions under your care. To ignore this is to govern with eyes closed.

Furthermore, I ask plainly: where in the 2025 approved budget is the allocation for public school reconstruction? If funds have been provided, then let the people know how and when they will be used. If no provision was made, then it is a failure that cannot be explained away.

A society that invests in banquets, motorcades, and empty ceremonies while its children are abandoned to unsafe classrooms has lost its moral compass.

This is an appeal, not of politics but of humanity. It is an appeal to act now — to rise above excuses and to give our children the dignity of safe, decent schools. For every day we delay, we gamble with lives and with the future.

History will record not what we promised, but what we built. Posterity will remember not what we said, but what we did for the children who could not speak for themselves.

I therefore appeal to you, Commissioner, to move swiftly: visit these schools, declare the truth of their condition, release the details of the 2025 budget allocation, and begin reconstruction without delay.

The children deserve no less. The State deserves no less. Your conscience, I believe, will permit no less.

Yours faithfully,

– Oladapo Mikky
