Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Representatives candidate for the Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency in the 2023 general elections, Hon Usman Austin Okai, has formally announced his decision not to participate in the 2027 general elections, declaring that he will neither contest nor seek any elective office.
Okai, who ran under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in the last National Assembly poll and finished second after a fiercely contested race, made the announcement on Wednesday at his residence in Abocho, Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State.
The declaration followed what he described as an expanded political meeting with constituents, political associates, community stakeholders and clergy leaders.
Addressing supporters, Okai said the decision came after wide consultations and deep reflection on his personal aspirations and the broader political realities ahead of 2027.
According to him, the move is in line with his pursuit of further academic advancement —business development, which he believes requires greater attention at this stage of his life. He stressed, however, that his withdrawal from the ballot does not signal a retreat from active politics.
Rather, Okai reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), noting that he intends to channel his energy into building a formidable opposition coalition capable of challenging the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state and at the national level.
He explained that stepping aside would also create space for other credible —younger aspirants within the opposition fold to emerge and contributes meaningfully to the democratic process.
“Leadership is not only about contesting elections,” he reportedly told supporters, adding that strengthening institutions and nurturing new leaders are equally vital to sustainable political change”, he added.
Okai acknowledged that some of his supporters might feel disappointed by his decision, given the momentum he built during the 2023 contest, but urged them to respect his choice and remain committed to the collective struggle for good governance and accountability.
Widely known as an outspoken activist and social crusader, Okai has cultivated a reputation as a vocal critic of maladministration and what he often describes as systemic bad governance. Over the years, he has positioned himself as a prominent voice for the masses, consistently engaging public institutions and elected officials on issues of transparency, equity and development.
Political observers, reacted that his decision not to run in 2027 could reshaping opposition dynamics in Dekina/Bassa Federal Constituency and beyond, particularly as realignments begin ahead of the next general elections. While he may not be on the ballot, analysts believe Okai is likely to remain an influential figure in Kogi’s political landscape in the years leading up to 2027.
