The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Muhammed Tijani Anaje, has conferred a medal of special recognition on Prince Maleek Shehu Okino, Convener of the Ebira Mountaineering Derby (EMD), in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to community development and human capital advancement in Ebiraland.
The honour recognizes Prince Okino’s consistent efforts in promoting Ebira heritage, empowering youths, and fostering unity through the Ebira Mountaineering Derby; an annual hiking and cultural initiative established in 2015. Since its inception, the Derby has grown into a major platform for celebrating Ebira culture, strengthening social cohesion, and showcasing the rich and scenic landscape of Ebiraland to a wider audience.
The Ebira Mountaineering Derby was conceived as more than a physical challenge; it is a cultural movement aimed at preserving tradition, instilling pride in heritage, and creating opportunities for young people. Over the years, it has successfully combined adventure, culture, and community engagement, positioning Ebiraland as a destination of cultural and ecological significance.
The 2025 edition of the Derby, tagged “Ohinoyi’s Edition,” introduced a unique hunting expedition designed to promote and support local Ebira trado-hunters; many of whom lack the resources and exposure needed to showcase their craft. This special feature highlighted the historical and cultural importance of hunting within Ebira society while giving recognition to individuals who have long contributed to communal life without public acknowledgment.
Commending Prince Okino, the Ohinoyi praised his vision, dedication, and selfless service, urging well-meaning sons and daughters of Ebiraland to emulate his example by contributing meaningfully to the progress and development of the land.
Prince Maleek Shehu Okino expressed profound gratitude to the Ohinoyi for the honour and reaffirmed his continuous commitment to the development of Ebiraland.
“We chose to invest our time and resources in creating visibility and celebrating the traditional and cultural heritage of the Ebira people because we place high value on it as the essence of the Ebira Mountaineering Derby.
“This is a life where anyone could become whatever they want, given that the world is a stage with diverse players and choices. But what about those individuals who may be unable to establish the right optics for their craft due to limited resources, social exposure, or other mitigating factors—yet remain an integral part of our society?
“At EMD25, we wanted the Ebira hunters to feel seen and appreciated. We therefore created this exciting component to celebrate Ebira trado-hunters and offer them global exposure. It is our prayer that honour should be accorded to those who deserve it as we take Ebira to the world,” he said.
