Miss Ifunanya Atuchukwu, an NYSC member serving in Kogi has urged students to develop their talents and skills to bringing out the best in them.
Atuchukwu gave the advice at a Competition and Skills Acquisition program she organised for Secondary School Students as part her community service project in Lokoja on Tuesday, tagged: “SKILLS TRILLS”.
She said that the program was borne out of passion for young ones who have the skills and talents, to motivate them to harness and develop such potentials to bringing out the best in them.
According to her, skills like fine art, music, computer, poetry among others which parents often do not notice or see anything good in it could be developed to help their children in life.
“Everyone was born to be a solution to another man’s problem. God is so generous that He gives everyone a unique ability, and it is our responsibility as individual to figure it out.
“The truth is we may never be happy in life if we don’t discover the purpose in which we are created, every skill, dream, talent and personality has a purpose,” she said.
Atuchukwu further advised the students to be more creative themselves to developing their skills and talents, while encouraging teachers to ensure they made learning a learner centre.
“We must make sure that these children develop passion for their talents through advice, counseling, motivation and assessment through healthy competitions These talents are inborn,” she added.
The corp member appealed to parents, guardians, governments and other relevant stakeholders to join hands together to ensure that these talents, skills, dreams, hopes and visions were not sidelined or ignored.
Mr Etu Muazu-Idris, NYSC Zonal Inspector, Lokoja, commended the corp member for the gesture, saying she had made the scheme proud by enabling young chaps to discover their innate talents in Music, Fine art, ICT among others.
He added: “I must say that we are very proud of your doggedness and commitment to projecting the scheme in a good light by coming up with personal community development service.”
Mr Dayo Thomas, Director General of Graphic Newspaper, who was a special guest of honour, urged the students to be passionate about their dreams, talents and skills, saying “it takes only yourself to stop your dream.
“I am proud of this corp member because where others are trying to satisfying their needs, you are putting your scarce resources together to drive the talents, skills and dreams of these young ones.”
Some of the students who spoke with our correspondent in separate interviews, commended the corp member for the initiative, saying the competition had helped them on how to manage stage freight.
Favour Ogba, a Student of Muslim Community Secondary School, Lokoja, said that he had learnt how to manage stage freight and effectively interact with the audience.
“We want to thank the convener of this event for the gesture towards students, because it will bring out the best in us. I am better off the way I came,” Ogba said.
Many students from different schools partake in various competitions at the event such as music, fine art, debate, computer, among others.
