Former Chairman Kogi State Chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Comrade Nihi Oladele today emerged President of the Council thereby succeeding Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere. The election and swearing in signaled an end to the week-long Congress and political horse trading for the leadership of the Council.
The Kogi state born youth activist defeated three other candidates in a keenly contested election at the just concluded Unity Congress of the Council held in Abuja. Oladele was also sworn in today as the new President of the Council in line with the Constitution of the Youth Council.
Comrade Oladele replaces Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere who had last week issued a notice of resignation from office as the national president of the Youth Council effective from the date of swearing in of his successor.
Mr. Ugochinyere had in a world press conference on Thursday issued notice of his resignation as the president of the council citing his deep involvement in opposition politics.
“During my leave from the Youth Council particularly as the spokesperson of the Nigerian opposition, the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP and as the National Chairman of Action Peoples Party, APP, I have come to the informed conclusion that I may not be in the best position to be totally neutral to lead Nigerian youths as president of the National Youth Council of Nigeria”.
The election of Oladele was the high point of the week-long unity Congress held in Abuja. Other highpoints of the event include the ratification of former president Olusegun Obasanjo as the “Father of the Nation”.
The Youth Council also ratified the President of the Senate Dr. Bukola Saraki as “Defender Of Constitutional Governance And Parliamentary Independence”. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogora was ratified for “Champion Of Democracy” honour while Governor Ezenwo Nysom Wike of Rivers State was named “Protector Of Rivers Commonwealth And Champion Of Democracy”.
