The Kogi State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has commenced the training of communities in six (6) priority sites on the various aspects of catchment management, and how it affects their lives.
Speaking at an inception meeting at the SPMU in Lokoja, the Project Coordinator, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto, enjoined the consulting team to deliver according to job specification and adhere to stipulated timelines.
She stressed further that NEWMAP’s main objective is its commitment to enhancing the livelihoods of all communities of intervention and catchment management is yet another avenue of achieving this purpose.
According to her, NEWMAP will continue to ensure that every affected community in the state gets a better deal.
Responding, the team lead for Mecon Engineering and Geological Services Limited, Mr. Titus Dashan, promised to deliver on the assignment, whilst adhering strictly to stipulated timelines.
Aspects of the training programme include; waste management, social and environmental guidelines, especially as with regards COVID-19 safety rules, and ethno-forestry.
The first phase of training took the team to Kabba in Kogi West, as well as the Kogi Central Senatorial District where community members in Ozuri, Etahi – Okene, as well as Etahi – Adavi were trained.
Other communities to be trained include Ogane-Aji, Ugwolawo and Ankpa in the Eastern Senatorial District.
