The interim chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr Steven Akwu has officially handed over to the newly appointed chairman, Mallam Nuhu Ahmed, yesterday.
In his handing-over speech, Steven Akwu thanked the Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada for the confidence he reposed in him and his interim committee. He described the appointment of Mallam Nuhu Ahmed as the new SUBEB chairman as a new beginning for the commission.
Steven Akwu noted that the mandate given to them by the Capt Idris Wada was to identify the root cause of crisis in SUBEB such as non payment of teacher’s salary by the commission.
He noted that while the issue of teacher’s salary crisis is not fully over at the moment, substantial effort had been made in addressing the issue. That while they have cleared teacher’s salary in Seven (7) Local Government Areas of the state up to November 2014, efforts are on-going to clear the ones of the fourteen local government areas. Steven Akwu went further to say that the commission has cleared the Pensioners and have paid their arrears up to December, 2014. Association of Primary School Heads have also been cleared and paid till December 2014 and plan to put an end to delay in the payment of teacher’s salary had also been put in place.
The new Chairman, while appreciating The governor of Kogi State, Capt Idris Wada for finding him worthy for the appointment, expressed his gratitude to Allah for his appointment and solicited for the support and cooperation of the management team for the improvement of the board.
He said teachers welfare is key to high quality education and the state government is ready to improve the welfare of Kogi teachers. According to him, the government of Capt Wada has been working to ensure that every child in Kogi state must have access to education and that is why he was keen on improving the service delivery at SUBEB. He said he will work assiduously to look into the report of the interim committee and ensure its implementation.
