The Kogi Government says 1,387, 808 children between six and 59 months in the state had received Vitamin A Supplement this year translating to 97 per cent of eligible children.
Mr Bolarinwa Ogundusi, the state Nutrition Officer/MNCHW Focal Person, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Wednesday.
He said that 651, 095 children received vitamin A supplement in January while 736, 713 received it in the last round of the Maternal New Born Child Health Week (MNCHW) in July.
Ogundusi said another round of MNCHW commenced on Monday in the state and was officially inaugurated by Gov. Yahaya Bello on Tuesday.
He described MNCHW as a biannual healthcare programme aimed at ensuring reduction in maternal, neonatal and child mortality as well as strengthen routine healthcare services delivery.
“It is an integral component of Save One Million Lives (SOML) initiative which has helped to improve the health indices of the citizens of Kogi.
“This round of MNCHW will last for 10 days to make sure that all eligible children are reached. The first five days is facility based while the remaining five days are outreaches and house to house.
“Basic equipment and drugs essential drugs worth millions of naira have been distributed to 236 essential drugs Primary Healthcare Centres across the state.
“Interventions for this round are vitamin A supplementation; immunisations; focus antenatal care; health education; HIV screening/counseling; nutrition; deworming; family planning services, among others.
“We thank the New Direction Government led by Gov. Bello, and the Commissioner for health and his team, for providing the necessary leaderships and funds for SOML and this programme in particular,” Ogundusi said.
