The Chief Medical Officer of the General Hospital Iyale, Dr. Samson Yusuf has decried the poor state of infrastructure and moribund equipment in the health facility.
Dr. Yusuf revealed this recently to The Graphic during a tour of the hospital at Iyale, Dekina Local Government. This comes in the wake of an almost fatal accident which occurred when the ceiling boards in the theater collapsed a few hours before a surgery was slated to be performed, fortunately no life was lost in the mishap.
The health professional voiced concern over the poor state of the General Hospital which had been left in a total state of disrepair and neglect. The ceiling at the maternity ward collapsed recently and the roofs in the male/female wards are leaking, the state of our Administrative blocks which comprises of the Doctors office, CMO’s office and Pharmacy is not any better” he revealed.
A visit to the hospital showed that apart from the lack of basic health facilities such as clinical services items, oxygen cylinder and even adequate drugs there is absence of power supply and no funds to buy diesel, the integrity of the buildings cannot be guaranteed due to large gaping holes in the roofs with a general walkway that is falling apart.
The Medical Expert also bemoaned the shortage of health workers in the health facility. “There are only four Nurses and a Doctor in the hospital which serves all the communities in and around Iyale comprising of Ulaja, Oje, Etutekpe, Ikpakpala, Ologba, Atochi, Ate-Uge, Ogane-Uge, Ojuwo Ele, Adumu, Oganenigu and many more. The shortage of manpower has led to the lack of motivation on the part of staffs that are usually over worked”.
The C.M.O called on the State Government, relevant authorities and stakeholders of the health sector to rehabilitate the health facility and also provide a good road network linking the community to the General Hospital.
In his words, apart from the rehabilitation and repairs done in the Laboratory by the Center for integrated Health Programs using Global funds resources, nothing has been done in the facility in recent time as it was neglected in the last round of rehabilitation by the previous government.
