Kogi State Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) said it has mediated the signing of several Community Development Agreements (CDAs) and turned many illegal miners to legal status in the last one year of inauguration.
This was revealed yesterday in the address of its chairperson, Hajia Hassiat Ozavize Suleiman in Lokoja while addressing newsmen as part of activities marking the one year existence of the committee in the state.
The MIREMCO boss whose birthday coincided with the anniversary, lamented that the committee which was nationally established across the 36 states of the federation since 2007 to facilitate rapid mineral resources development was virtually non existent before the present administration of Governor Yahaya Bello revived it.
“We have held countless meetings and generated substantial amount of reports and recommendations to the Federation Ministry of Mines and Steel Development which placed Kogi MIREMCO second at the first National Discourse on the opportunities and challenges of artisanal mining”, she revealed.
According to her, aggressive sensitisation of artisans on health and environmental risks of illegal mining by MIREMCO has drastically reduced its scourge in the last year its inauguration.
In his contribution, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Solid Minerals, Hon. Charles Umoru said the committee received the vibrancy it deserves as a result of the political will of Governor Yahaya Bello and its importance to the national economic development.
Governor Yahaya Bello, according to him would leave no stone unturned in partnering with the Federation Government for effective exploration and exploitation of the state mineral resources for the benefit of the people of Kogi State.
