Coordinators of the Big Tent across 36 states in Nigeria has vehemently condemned the planned national convention of Labour Party (LP) scheduled for March 27, 2024.
Arising from its bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday, the coordinators said the planned convention is an affront to party members’ will and a violation of democratic principles.
They called for the immediate cessation of such clandestine activities and demanded for proper ward, local government, and state congresses in accordance with the party’s constitution.
Kogi State Coordinator of Big Tent, Comrade Sunday Bala Oma, who shared the resolution of the meeting with our reporter, said their collective purpose was to address the purported convention announced by the Labour Party under the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure.
“Rooted in our commitment to accountability, fairness, equity, transparency, and justice – the core tenets of the Obideints movement – we embarked on this discussion to safeguard the interests of the grassroots populace and all citizens of Nigeria.
“We unequivocally denounce the purported convention orchestrated by Barr. Julius Abure, which failed to involve party members in the decision-making process. The absence of prior knowledge regarding organized congresses from ward to local government and then to state leadership across all 36 states undermines democratic principles within the party.
“The actions of Barr. Julius Abure has undermined the values of accountability and transparency, essential for fostering trust and equity within the party. This disregard for transparency erodes our faith in the party’s commitment to fairness.
“We demand the reversal of the purported convention by the leadership of the Labour Party. It is imperative that due process is followed to restore the trust of party faithfuls across the board.
“We are steadfast in our determination to collaborate with the party and other stakeholders to promote proper convention procedures: We advocate for an accountable, transparent, fair, and just convention process aligned with democratic norms and the party’s constitution,” he said.
He noted that the State Coordinators of the Big Tent reaffirmed their unwavering dedication to the principles of accountability, fairness, equity, transparency, and justice.
“Our resolve against the flawed convention orchestrated by Barr. Julius Abure remains resolute. We implore the leadership of the Labour Party to heed our calls for transparency and democratic governance. Let it be known that our commitment to a democratic and inclusive process remains steadfast, ensuring that the aspirations of party members across the nation are authentically represented.
“We commit to advancing the goals of the party, ensuring that its actions echo the voices of the masses across all 36 states of Nigeria and the FCT.
“We pledge to strengthen the party’s activities in accordance with the law and the will of the people, as enshrined in the party’s constitution.”
