Former Ofu Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Isah Ameh (Almajiri) has hailed the National Assembly on the passage of Local Government Autonomy Bill, describing it as the best thing that has happened to Nigeria democracy in recent time, as this will reduce influence of Governors in their financial management.
Isah Ameh, who is Coordinator Kogi State chapter of Dr Sule Lamido presidential campaign organization, made this statement in Lokoja while reacting to the LG Autonomy granted by the National Assembly, lauded their resolved and bold step taken to grant Financial Autonomy to the Local Government councils in the country.
The former council boss noted that the high level of Governors interference in the financial dealings of the Local Government has crippled democracy and function of the Local Government Councils, thereby denying the much needed development at the third tier of Government.
He described the situation where Governors had constituted themselves as conduit pipe that continuously hijacked funds meant for the councils in the name of “joint account” as worrisome and evil.
“I am optimistic that the current National Assembly is fully committed to ensure a very effective Local Government system that would serve as a catalyst for rapid infrastructure, economic, security, political and soci-economic development at the grassroots level is entrenched”, Isah said.
He also commended the move for INEC to take over the conduct of the Local government Election from SIEC as this will encourage true representation and grassroots participation in politics.
