Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Kogi State University Chapter have been urged to suspend their industrial action by the Governor of the State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello at a meeting with the leadership of the union.
According to the Governor, members of the Union should continue to dialogue with government, saying his administration has shown commitment to lift the university to new heights. He said his administration is determined to make the university one of the best citadels of learning in Nigeria.
Alhaji Yahaya Bello said the academic staff should reciprocate his gesture by complimenting his administration’s desire to make the university a world-class institution. He said his administration paid two months’ salaries to the university staff within his first 57 days in office.
The Governor said it will not be proper for the union to punish his government and the innocent students for the failure of the past administration to pay their salaries, saying his government will continue to accord priority to the educational sector.
In his response, the Acting Chairman of ASUU in the Kogi State University, Comrade Gbenga Aina assured the Governor that the Union will go back to the negotiation table to give consideration to his call.
Government is hopeful that the union will act in the interest of the people of the state.
