Former Governor of Kogi State, Abubakar Audu has become a permanent decimal in the politics of Kogi State since 1990/1991 when he first assumed office as the Number One Citizen of the ‘Confluence State’.
In fairness to him, he made an appreciable impact; so much that he is one of the few Nigerians privileged to return to the exalted podium for an emotional encore. In appreciation, the people of Kogi named a couple of outstanding landmarks in his honour.
Audu, probably misread the effusively show of respect by his people to mean he had been crowned Emperor of Kogi.
Audu is now convinced no one else but him has the right to Luggard House. Like clock-work, he dutifully shows up to contest election for the office of Governor of Kogi State, anytime the opportunity presents itself.
Governorship election in Kogi State is slated for October. Again, Audu-the Permanent Governorship Contestant has thrown his hat in the ring. This time, however, his interest is not only being met with stiff resistance, it is also derided with scorn by many who think the former governor should assume a fatherly role.
While an All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate which Audu has aligned with is highly rated, there is a strong believe that Audu does not have integrity to lead the party to victory.
The forces aligned against him can be found across the two leading political parties – APC and the PDP. If their wishes are granted, then Audu may not be able to prosecute his governorship ambition in either the APC or PDP.
The allegation is that an Audu canditure for governorship candidate carries too much baggage. From his multiple cases with the anti-graft agency EFCC to the moral question of allegedly marrying a teenage girl, the conclusion is that Audu will be assumed less.
