Senator Smart Adeyemi representing Kogi West Senatorial District at the National Assembly on Tuesday said the level of political awareness and participation among Nigerians has appreciated significantly over the last 10 years.
Adeyemi made the observation at the Peoples’ Democratic party (PDP) state secretariat in Lokoja while speaking with newsmen after submitting his intent and Nomination form to contest the senatorial seat for the third time.
He said democratic governance in the country had evolved to the level that almost everybody was now aware of the importance of having credible representation.
“In those days a leader could dictate and decree who should run, the credibility notwithstanding but politics has improved, everybody is now very much aware of the importance of having people they are convinced will represent them well”,
The senator said he accepted to re-contest after seven Local Government Council chairmen from Kogi West Senatorial District and their PDP chairmen came together to purchase a form for him.
“I have to wait this far because I wanted to be sure that the people want me. So, I came to the conclusion that a good percentage of the people want me to contest for the third time”, he said.
“Leaders are not expected to talk from the parochial point of view; leadership is beyond that level. When God almighty chooses you to be a leader, you certainly become one. I know who my leaders and my followers are. The people also know who is their leader”.
On the zoning of the Senate seat to Yagba, Adeyemi said his nomination by the council chairmen was after due and wide consultations with stakeholders.
He said those against him were “opportunists” who were at one time or the other lucky to have been offered political appointments and now parade themselves as political leaders.
He added that leadership is inbuilt and that those who don’t have the quality can never become one. “It is imperative to allow people to choose their leader by virtue of his performance in the area of improving their living standard,” he said.

Your comment…Let be in the record that any human being that bite the finger that fed him will definitely pay for it. It all started in the year 2009 when madam sallybolt was invited to caused problem in kogi state under ibro then, wada came, did his own he sacked 2010 to date because the staffs asked for minimum wage,my people to be realistic, were is the minimum wage? Now it is the turn of our governor, Yaya Bello, since nobody talked in 2009 and 2013 when majority of our youths were saked, you should expect him to do what those that had came before him had done and gone, without anyone challenging them, despite the fact that we all voted them in to help the state but instead they are inflicting the masses hunger and joblessness.
