The Kogi Government has trained 63 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) to the State Governor, who will monitor the activities of health officers to cater for women and children during its Maternal and Neonatal Child Health Week (MNCHW).
The one-day training held on Wednesday in Lokoja, also included 30 senior health professionals, who will also supervise the implementation of the health week to ensure wide coverage and adequate compliance by the health workers.
The Programme’s Focal Person in the state, Mr Bolarinwa Ogundusi, said “we are training 63 SSAs for monitoring and we will be sending three SSAs each to their local government areas with one per district.
“They are also going to help us to mobilise their people at the grassroots to come out and access the health commodities, because they are the politicians, movers and shakers of their communities.
“We want to make sure that people really have the urge to go out and access the commodities. Everything that is needed for this round has been provided,” he explained.
Ogundusi said that the health ministry had decided to extend this round of MNCHW to 10 days for effective coverage, to commence Fromm’s Nov. 27 to Dec. 8, and would run in 717 facilities across the 21 local government areas of the state.
He noted that the additional five days would be house- to -house outreaches to make sure that every eligible child, men and women in the state would be given the necessary commodities.
He advised all the citizens of Kogi to come out in their large numbers to access the commodities, saying the intervention would do them good as it will prevent outbreak of diseases, malnutrition, and ensure smooth childbirth.
The health care commodities includes, Vit. A supplements, de-worming, immunisation, nutrition, family planning, birth registration, care for pregnant women, health promotion, among others.
Mr Ibrahim Tahiru, SSA to Gov. Yahaya Bello, on Security and Intelligence, said that the decision to get the SSAs involved was a very good development, and commended governments and their partners for their cooperation and the initiative.
“It is very essential that we go all out to mobilise our people at the grassroots to bring out their children to access the commodities, which will help to eradicate some of these childhood diseases.
“I feel highly elated because the training today has enriched us with prerequisites to go out to our communities to give the health officers the necessary support to ensure the targeted population is actually reached,” Tahiru said.
