Kogi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT)  has called on the Attah  Igala, Chief Michael Idakwo Ameh Oboni,  to urge the state government to pay their entitlements and outstanding salaries.

The union said non-payment of their entitlements and salaries has led to the death of some of its members.

State chairman of NUT, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi, made the call at the weekend when he led a delegation of teachers to the Attah’s palace in Idah.

He decried what he called total neglect of basic education in the state, alleging that the government no longer supplies chalk and other teaching materials to schools.

He also lamented that teachers do not have chairs and desks and that they spend part of their salaries on school register, scheme of work and other instructional materials.

The chairman said they are being owed September and October’s salaries and leave grant and that they are yet to be included in the minimum wage scheme.

Abdullahi lamented that recently, a teacher died due to his inability to raise N3,000 required for medical bills.

He pleaded with the Attah to use his status to intervene in the crisis so as to save the future of children in the state.

Responding, the Attah described the NUT as an  organised professional group that is interested in quality education.

He promised to intervene in the crisis, and lamented that political office holders who were taught by teachers, rather than honour them, decided to relegate them to the background.
