The Kogi students’ cadet in training at Nigerian Police Academy in Kano State, has urged Kogi Government to incorporate them into the state’s bursary allowances and other benefits for students in tertiary institutions.
Solomon Abbah, who led the team of 16 cadet officers, made the request during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya in her office in Lokoja.
According to Abbah, we are Kogi indigenes who are Cadets in training of the first regular course academic session of the Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
“We are here to solicit the support of the state government to incorporate us into whatever benefits the students of tertiary institutions are enjoying from the state including bursary allowances”, Abbah said.
He added that the visit was also to create awareness about the academy and enlighten the Kogi youths and members of the society about what the academy was all about.
“We have good plans and strategies in place for the youths to get educated, take advantage of the available opportunities in the academy, and build our youths to be future leaders of this great nation,” Abbah said.
In her remarks, the Commissioner said she was delighted that Kogi was having good representation among the cadets in the Police Academy, saying “it is a call for us to do more in ensuring that there is more sensitization among the Kogi youths”.
“It is also interested to note that even the representation we have currently is lopsided towards one part of the state as we don’t seem to have other parts of the state represented among you.
“You will also be given us a lot of information by spending time to interact with the ministry why you are here; the challenge for people to be on the abiding side of the law.
“Even as we are progressing towards the state policing and the rest of the discussion that is ongoing, and that you will be able to give support to the state in terms of security.
“You are trailblazers and I believe you all look very responsible in setting the part of what will be an expanded career, hope for the people, and be productive and useful members of the society,” Osikoya said.
The commissioner assured the cadets that the state government would grant their request, saying the governor had recently increased the bursary by 300 per cent.
The commissioner added that the cadets would also be carried along in the scholarships and all other accruing benefits for Kogi students in tertiary institutions.
Also speaking, Mr Deola Eseyin, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Empowerment, Sports and Students Affairs, promised that the cadet would be included in the bursary funds by the ministry of education who would give approval of their inclusion.
According to Eseyin, when GYB assumed office, he made a promise to increase the state bursary allowance for Kogi students which he has done with 300 per cent increment.
“We urge you to be closer to the government so as to always get the required information and updates on all other benefits for Kogi students in tertiary institutions”, Eseyin advised.
