Speaker of Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Matthew Kolawole, on Saturday, empowered over 1000 women in his Kabba-Bunu constituency with cash grants to support their businesses.
The widows also got food gifts and business equipment at the empowerment programme which took place at St. Augustine College Hall, Kabba.
The Speaker said his utmost desire is to put smiles on the faces of his constituents by giving them what they can use to better their lives.
He stated that his gesture is aimed at pulling widows out of poverty by making them self reliant.
“For the sake of my people, I am ready to work together with the executive arm of government and other necessary stakeholders, to see to it that my people are impacted positively.
“Democracy, to me, is about the ordinary people out there. It is about making concerted efforts to see that a better life is provided for the people who have given us their mandate to represent them at the various levels of governance.”
One of the traditional rulers in the area, Chief Gbenga Olutobaje described the empowerment programme for women as unprecedented in the annals of politics in Kabba/Bunu state constituency.
He said the Speaker is among the best legislators that have represented the area and called the people to support him so that he can succeed both as a legislator and as one of the sons of Okunland.
The Speaker had three months ago also gave out grinding machines, computer sets, power generating sets, refrigerators, female hair dressing equipment amidst others to his constituency.
