The Kogi state police command has, in its determination to streamline carriage and use of firearms in private hands, taken steps to validate licenses of such owners in the state.
The Police Public Revelations Officer, Olusola Adebayo (ASP), told our reporter that the step is aimed at preventing arms proliferation and reduce subdue the rise in violent crimes associated with the use of firearms.
He therefore directed residents of Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State, to owmers of licensed firearms to report at the Police State Headquarters, Lokoja, from Wednesday 22nd of July, to Thursday 30th July, 2015, to validate their firearms license, whether the license is obtained from Kogi State or any other state, irrespective of renewal status.
Adebayo made it clear that anybody who fails to participate in this exercise and is found in possession of firearms of any caliber within the state will be treated as being “unlawfully in possession of firearm”, and would be made to face the full wrath of the law.
He also called on members of the public to support the efforts of the police to rid the state of all forms of crime by complying with this directive.
