The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Kogi State has ordered fresh primaries in Bassa and Olamaboro local government areas following complaints of irregularities and diversion of election materials in some councils.

The state PDP Chairman, Comrade Hassan Salawu, who confirmed the development, said there were valid complaints from the councils hence, the need for a fresh primary.

Salawu said the party was determined to conduct a transparent, free, fair and credible election, adding that the steps taken by the party had shown that it was capable of solving its internal problems.

He called on all aspirants to always play by the rules, noting that the party would maintain its leadership position through credible polls.

The primaries were earlier said to have been won by Magida Umar and Farouk Adedoh of Bassa and Olamaboro local government areas respectively.

A source at the PDP Secretariat said the fresh would give all the aspirants a level playing ground, adding that the party had no anointed candidate.

The source added that Governor Idris Wada, who is the leader of the party in the state, had directed that a fresh primary be conducted to put to rest the controversies trailing the conduct of the primaries last week in the affected councils.

A PDP chieftain from Olamaboro, and a member House of Assembly, Gabriel Yunusa Olofu, told journalists in Lokoja yesterday that his group was ready for the fresh primaries.

Efforts to reach the former Liaison Officers of Olamaboro and Bassa, Adejoh and Umar, who worn the earlier primaries, proved abortive as they neither picked their calls nor replied text messages sent to them.
