Kogi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Oludolapo Ahile, yesterday condemned the manner in which corps members deployed as ad-hoc staff for the general elections were being treated. She lamented that their safety and security concerns were being taken for granted even as the rescheduled polls get closer.
Speaking at a stakeholders meeting to sensitise members of the public on its readiness for the election, she said the corps members were not given adequate security cover, as they were subjected to inhuman treatment at the Registration Area Centres where they were deployed.She added that parents of corps members were now unwilling to allow their wards participate in the exercise due to fear of the unknown, yet they are expected to report for duty during the election on Friday.
Ahile noted that she was standing in for the corps only if the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) promises to provide adequate security for the corps members’ safety.
Also, INEC in Bauchi State said it has begun sorting sensitive materials for distribution to the 20 local government areas of the state ahead of Saturday’s polls.Acting Head of Voter Education and Public Enlightenment, Ahmed Waziri, disclosed this yesterday at the Bauchi branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
He said all the sensitive materials for the state have been received and will be distributed across the councils on Thursday.“We are here with all the electoral officers and political parties and we are sorting out the sensitive materials based on local government areas. “What we have are the sensitive materials including ballot papers and result sheets and all the materials are intact,” he said.
