Following the inability to pay their salary after the federal government had sent allocation to 21 local government councils in Kogi State, a five day ultimatum beginning from Monday 15th July to Friday, 19th July, 2019 has been given to Director of Local Governments/Local Government Treasurers in Kogi State (DLGs/LGTs) to comply with an earlier demand by Local Government workers.
The Labour leaders urged them to adhere strictly to the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) guidelines that stress the need to accord workers monthly salaries/allowances top priority.
The ultimatum is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting held by leaders of Kogi Central Branch Union Forum and signed by the forum chairman of NULGE, NUT, NASU, M/HWUN, NANNMS, NUP.
In the communique, the joint union leaders who called on DLGs/LGTs to comply with their earlier demand without further delay, assured of their preparedness to take all necessary actions in ensuring their compliance with the NFIU directives/guideline in respect of the payment of 100per cent workers and retirees monthly salaries, pensions and allowances respectively.
The joint union leaders further said, “failure to comply, we shall be compelled to invite the EFCC, ICPC and the NFIU to carry out investigations as to why workers and pensioners have been placed on percentage salaries and pensions since January, 2016 till date”.
The communique dated 12th July, 2019 and addressed to DLGs/LGTs copied the state chapter of relevant trade unions, security agencies and NFIU, Kogi State chapter.
It would be recalled that leaders of Kogi Central Branch Union Forum last week issued a joint statement calling for strict adherence to the NFIU guidelines and advocated for 100% payment of their monthly salaries/allowances.
Efforts made by the forum to get the information disseminated to workers in various Local Governments in Kogi Central resulted to a clash between workers of some local governments in the area and suspected political thugs.
