The Executive Chairman of Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, Hon. Tosin Olokun, has announced new restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders as part of intensified efforts to tackle insecurity within the council area.
The decision was disclosed on Friday following a high-level security meeting convened by the council chairman with the leadership of the Motorcycle and Tricycle Riders Association in the local government.
In a press statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to local government council, Mr. Adeyemi Babarinde Sunday, the meeting was described as a proactive measure aimed at addressing security concerns, particularly crimes perpetrated under the cover of darkness with the use of motorcycles and tricycles.
The security meeting had in attendance representatives of the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Vigilante Service, Local Government Hunters, and other key security stakeholders.
“Following exhaustive deliberations, the council resolved to impose a restriction on the operational hours of motorcycle and tricycle operators within town limits. Henceforth, their operations are limited to the hours between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. daily.
“However, the council acknowledged the peculiar transportation needs of residents in interior communities and granted a grace period until 7:30 p.m. for riders commuting from rural areas into the town to conclude their daily activities,” the statement read.
Olokun emphasized that the directive takes immediate effect and warned that defaulters would be apprehended and prosecuted in line with existing laws.
The chairman appealed for maximum cooperation from all motorcycle and tricycle operators, stressing that the measure was in the best interest of public safety and security.
He reiterated the council’s commitment to promoting a secure and orderly environment conducive for businesses and community life across Yagba West.
