Lecturers from Kogi State studying abroad have appealed to Governor Yahaya Bello to pay their 11 months outstanding salary arrears.
The leader of the affected lecturers, Mr Simon Sunday of the Department of Accounting, Kogi State University, Anyigba, who is a Doctoral candidate at University Utara, Malaysia said 26 of them are suffering abroad.
Speaking with Daily Trust in Malaysia, Sunday disclosed that efforts to get the governor to pay the salaries have yielded no positive result, while appealing to other stakeholders to intervene in the matter.
He lamented that non-payment of the salary is threatening the completion of their studies as life was becoming unbearable despite being sponsored by Tertiary Education Fund (TETFund).
Sunday said: “It’s quite unfortunate that Kogi State government has exposed us to untold hardship for the past 11 months. The governor has declared us ghost workers and all efforts made to make him understand that we’re duly released to study abroad have yielded no result.
“Regular payment of salary is important in view of the fact that TETFund support was meant to be augmented by salary and has also lost value due to high exchange rate. This is threatening the completion of our programme and quick return home to contribute our quotas to our state development,” he said.
