The Kogi Government has commenced the construction of embankment around the N10 billion Greater Lokoja Waterworks, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Contract for the N350 million project was awarded by the state government in October 2013.

A NAN ccorrespondent who visited the waterworks on Thursday reports that the contractor handling the project, Skypond Nig. Ltd., had mobilised on site with heavy duty machinery.

NAN reports that workers were seen clearing and excavating soil around the area earmarked for the embankment.

The government embarked on the project following the devastating effects of the 2012 flood disaster on the waterworks complex which accounts for about 70 per cent of the water supply needs of residents of Lokoja.

Speaking to NAN, the site engineer, Mr Zou Khaizhou, said the embankment would be about 800 metres long and a height of about 3.3 metres.

He said that work on the project was delayed to allow the water level on the River Niger to drop to a manageable level.

Khaizhou said that the company had deployed enough men and materials on site, and promised that the project would be completed by May. (NAN)
