Kogi Governor Creates Ministry of Livestock Development

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi state has approved the establishment of the ministry of livestock development.

According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the Government of Kogi State, Dr. Folashade Ayode, in Lokoja on Thursday, the approval takes immediate effect.

Dr. Ayoade explained that the decision is to enhance livestock management in the state in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

She emphasized that the initiative is aimed at addressing critical livestock issues and supporting sustainable development in Kogi’s agricultural sector. The ministry is expected to enhance productivity and improve economic opportunities for farmers and livestock stakeholders.

Recall that the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA), Kogi state chapter, had in July last year, called for the establishment of Ministry of Livestock Development in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Lokoja on July 24, 2024, Chairman, Kogi state chapter of NVMA, Dr Tolu Omotugba, urged Governor Usman Ododo to consider the appointment of a credible veterinarian as Commissioner when the proposed ministry is created.

Also, during the flag off ceremony to commence the implementation of Private Veterinary Practice (PVP) program in December last year, Dr. Omotugba ⁠urged Governor Ododo to domesticate the Ministry of Livestock Development in the state to help consolidate on the gains of L-PRES when the project ends.
