The wife of Kogi State Governor, Sefinat Ododo, is to build a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts in the state.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Eunice Achimugu, made this known while addressing journalists in Lokoja on Wednesday.

Ms Achimugu said that the governor’s wife also promised to build a skill acquisition centre where youths, including drug addicts under rehabilitation, could be trained for various skills useful to society.

She explained that the measures taken were part of the state government’s collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and Kogi State command to fight illicit drug abuse and trafficking.

“It’ll be wrong if we just sit and watch our youths being destroyed by illicit drugs. The youth are the leaders of tomorrow and must be protected. Drastic measures have to be taken to save our youths, who are ignorant of the inherent dangers of those illicit drugs,” she said.

The special adviser said that part of the plan to fight drug abuse was showing video clips and visiting schools to sensitise the pupils/students to the dangers of illicit drugs.

According to her, the government will keep the collaboration with NDLEA to fight the menace and rescue the youth from destruction.

“This is why we joined hands with NDLEA in celebration of the United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking with the theme “Addressing drug challenges in health and humanitarian crisis,” June 2024.”
