By Muhammed Nasiru Adejoh.
The Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives and Member Representing Ankpa, Omala and Olamaboro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, Rt. Hon Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims has declared that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is at a threshold of history as he urged the Chairman to immortalise his reign.
The Deputy House Leader made these calls while monitoring an interface meeting between the House of Representatives Community on Electoral Matters and Leadership Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held at the House of Representatives during the week.
The meeting which was presided over by the House Committee Chairman, Hon. Balogin Adebayo Olusegun representing the Ibeju – Lekki Federal constituency of Lagos State had in attendance, a powerful delegation of INEC Nigeria led by its Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to among other things deliberate on a house resolution to restore six suppressed Constituencies across Kogi East Senatorial District of Kogi State.
While deliberating on the matter, the Deputy House Leader who was the mover of the motion sought to make an addendum for the addition of two State Constituencies in Olamaboro Local Government Area on account of an earlier judgement made available to him and his prayers were sustained by the Committee Chairman.
In his remarks, the INEC Chairman renewed his commitment towards protecting the electoral rights of all citizens as well ensuring that the commission is run along all constitutional provisions in the best interest of all citizens as he assured the committee that INEC will look into the matter as swift as possible and make its progresses public.
On account of his commitment towards the restoration of these Constituencies, the Deputy House Leader, Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Ibrahim Halims reiterated that unless INEC shows an evidence of appeal in any of these judgements, the most noble thing to do is to restore the affected State Constituencies as fast as possible to enable proper preparation for their inclusion in the 2027 general elections.
The suppressed State Constituencies are Bassa-nge/Igbirra, Igala Ogba, Enjema, Ugwolawo/Itobe, Ife/Ogodu, Dekina Town and Dekina District Constituencies as well as two other Constituencies from Olamaboro Local Government Area.
