Of all the names so far headlined, especially on the social media, as people seeking to represent Kogi East Senatorial zone come 2019, Dr. Victor Alewo Adoji manifestly stands out in several aspects. There is no gain stating the fact that his formal entry into the senatorial race has brought some semblance of modernity, urbaneness and decorum into what used to be a rather riotous and discouraging exercise.

This is what happens when men and women of pristine character and moral decency decide to venture into partisan politics. We are gradually bidding farewell to that era where touts, sleazy characters and people of questionable integrity and pedigree are accepted and elected into sensitive leadership positions.  Ideally, the best and brightest among us who have proven themselves in their chosen endeavours should occupy leadership positions, not the other way round.

It is an aberration for barely lettered and incompetent people to aspire for leadership positions in a society where we have countless capable and prepared hands. Time was when the brightest among us took the back seats on issues pertaining to governance. The fad across most modern day societies is simply to allow people with the required mental and intellectual power to lead them. The more lettered and competent a leader is, the higher his chances of providing solutions to problems confronting his people. The difference between the advanced society and the 3rd world nations is simply in the calibre and quality of people they choose or elect as leaders.

Dr. Victor Alewo Adoji without doubt symbolises and embodies the true change that Kogi East is in dire need of. It bears repeating that, this gentleman has the required character traits to turn things around through what he calls “innovative parliamentary representation” if given the opportunity to represent the Igala/Bassa nation in the hallowed chamber of the Nigerian Senate.

In a speech while formally declaring his intention to aspire for the Senatorial seat, Dr. Adoji expressed his resolve to bring a breath of fresh air and openness in his engagements with his constituents. In place of manifesto, he promised he would sign a social contract with the people.

He said, “I shall travel on a road less travelled by politicians in this clime; which is to sign a Social Contract with you instead of presenting an unrealistic manifesto. I am particularly interested in guiding and leading you to achieve your desired goals and not to reel out empty promises. What I owe you is to meet your needs to the best of my ability and to constantly tell you the truth, even if it hurts. This is what Social Contract entails”.

Given his enviable academic credentials and good understanding of what contemporary existential issues are, he is without doubt eminently qualified and has the right skills and experience to enthrone a regime of innovative parliamentary representation.

Undoubtedly, with a Dr. Adoji in the saddle, it would be a season of harvest of dividends of democracy for Kogi Easterners. He clearly knows what the issues are. He equally has what it takes to find enduring solutions to the problems. Leadership entails identifying challenges and putting in place mechanisms for resolving them.

“We shall in service to our constituents deploy creative energies, search for opportunities and leverage on profitable connections to attract meaningful development to our senatorial zone”.

Dr. Adoji is sure to bring civility, integrity, competence and moral decency to bear if given the opportunity come 2019. This is our project. Let us take ownership of this movement that has come to displace a regime of mediocrity and enthrone a system chiefly driven by innovative thinking.
