The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kogi state chapter on Monday suspended the industrial action embarked upon 72 days ago

The doctors said they called off the strike action to honour the national president of the association, Prof Mike Ogirima, who intervened to pave way for further negotiation with the Kogi state government.

The NMA in the state had on January 7, 2018 embarked on the industrial action over failure of the state government to pay its members some of their outstanding salaries, promotion of its members, failure of government to implement the revised CONMESS and retirement of senior doctors yet to attain the statutory age or year of retirement.

The state chairman of NMA, Dr Tijani Godwin, who spoke after an emergency meeting of the association, said they decided to suspend the strike also because of the plea from the public to consider the interest of the people.

According to him, the public has not been able to get the desired medical care in the state due to the industrial action.

Tijani directed all doctors working with Kogi state Government to resume work as from next Thursday.

Reading the resolution of the Congress, the NMA chairman said, “The Congress also expected the state government to pay the arrears of salary owed doctors within the next one month, and address other issues that resulted in the strike to avoid another round of strike after the expiration of the one month of the suspension of the strike.

“The Congress also warned against any form of victimisation of any NMA member that participated in the strike as such action with being resisted by NMA”.
