Natasha Akpoti, an aspirant for Kogi Central Senatorial District, has pledged to promote women’s participation in politics and ensure that their rights are protected if elected.
Akpoti, aspiring under the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2019 general election, told the News Agency of (NAN) in Lokoja on Sunday, that she would promote massive women’s participation in politics and ensure women’s rights are protected.
“It first starts with the sensitisation of a woman to come out of her shell and begin to assume to aspire for position of authority/leadership.
“A lot of women have achieved both in the corporate world, families, personal lives and in the immediate society,
“So, it is time for us to begin to give women opportunities to take charge in leadership and I believe when I get in there I am going to mentor a lot of women.
“I am going to extend a hand of friendship, leadership, mentorship to younger women, open doors, advocate for laws on child rights and free maternal healthcare services,” Akpoti said.
Akpoti, who is the founder of Builders Hub Impact Investment Programme, said she decided to contest under SDP, because the party’s philosophy resonates with her ideologies on politics.
According to her, our people have been marginalised from the necessity of government. When it comes to social justice and economic development we have been absolutely neglected.
She added that people have realised that government and governance is so far away from the masses, saying she stepped into the senatorial race to make a difference in matters that are crucial to their existence.
“So I can be the voice of the voiceless, though I have been a known advocate for the revival of Ajaokuta Steel Company, and we have achieved some milestone but that’s not enough and there is so much that’s needs to be done.
“We have the reforms in the steel sector, the creation of the steel laws, the creation for the steel authorities and so much more to ensure that social justice is included in the constitution.
“It is also worthy to note that I will push for inclusive governance which forms the fundamental principles of what the SDP stands for.
“It is all about bringing government closest to the grassroots, ensuring that their voices are captured and represented, ensuring that laws and governance meet the weakest of those in our society,” she said.
