It was a gathering of who is who in the building industry on Tuesday in Lokoja the Kogi State capital as members of the professional body honoured one of their own, Architect Salman Idris as the ‘Kogi Built Man of The Year.
Presenting the award, Kogi State Commissioner for Works and Housing, Engineer Abdulmumuni Sadiq, who represented the state Governor at the occasion, described Arc. Salman as a worthy son of the state who has done excellently well in his chosen profession.
In his speech, Arc. Salman, who was also the chairman of the occasion, commended the effort of the organiser in bringing together seasoned professionals in the building industry to chart a way forward for the industry.
“It is pertinent to state here that due to the various dimensions of today’s challenges as they confront Housing in Nigeria and Kogi State particularly, also being a need affecting everybody, all hands must be on deck to manage and address the acute shortage currently being experienced. The structuring of Institutional frameworks and teaching curriculum must strive to create the synergy between the Housing and non – Housing professionals making all relevant to confront this monster.
“Over the years, Housing need has continued to escalate without a matching corresponding supply to meet these needs. In Nigeria, for instance, the gap between demand and supply is put at 17 million housing units. This calls for exploration of different interventions to bridge this gap like we are doing today, ” he said.
He encouraged the state government to explore the cost of saving architecture and alternative approach to delivering mass housing for the people of Kogi state.
The three days exhibition had in attendance top architects and other building professionals.
