The Senator Representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sunday Karimi on Friday led a delegation of political leaders from the senatorial district to commiserate the communities affected by the recent boat mishap in Kogi State that resulted in several loss of lives, goods and missing persons.
About 200 passengers, mostly women, were on vessel that sunk in Niger River. At least 27 people died and more than 100 are missing after a boat capsized.
During the visit, the lawmaker announced the donation of N10m relief fund in support of the relatives of the victims and the affected community.
On the delegation were Karimi, Danladi Aguye, Member of House of Representatives for Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency, Abdullahi Adamu, Chairman of Lokoja Council and a former member of the House of Representatives, Haruna Isah.
Alhaji Dauda Kabir, the Maiyaki of Kupa who received the Senator and members of his delegation, expressed gratitude for the show of empathy.
The monarch called for the intervention of government and public spirited individuals to come to the support of the families that lost their loved ones, including properties in the aftermath of the unfortunate incident.
The paramount ruler requested Senator Karimi set up a support fund for the families.
The Senator immediately pledged a sum of N10m while Aguye also pledged N5m.
A fundraising committee was also set up for further support for the relatives of the victims headed by Haruna Isah.
Senator Karimi, in addition to the pledged N10m, gave out N1m cash to those present during the visit, while assurring he would continue to support the community to enable them to get on their feet.
The delegation took time off to inspect the Cottage Hospital under construction and financed privately by Senator Karimi in Edo Community, Kakanda.
