Kogi House of Assembly on Wednesday set up a seven-man committee to dialogue with the organised labour in the state in apparent bid to avert a looming industrial action.
The organized Labour in Kogi State had earlier issued a one week ultimatum to the Kogi State Government to pay its workers their full salary or risk a strike.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the action followed the adoption of a motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by Haruna Idoko Musa (APC-Idah) at a plenary in Lokoja.
Musa had said that it would be disastrous for the workers go on strike “at this trying period” of the nation’s economy.
Seconding the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Hassan Àbdullahi (APC-Dekina-Okura) emphasized the need for industrial harmony between the state government and its employees.
The House Speaker, Prince Matthew Kolawole, after the motion was adopted through a voice vote, set up a seven-man committee to meet with labour leaders.
Kolawole said the committee should commence interface with labour immediately to avert the looming strike, which, he said, would be detrimental to the state.
The organised labour in the state comprising the Nigeria Labour congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Public Service Joint Negotiating Council (PSJNC), on Sept. 5 issued a one-week ultimatum to government to pay its workers their July salary in full.
