Kogi Assembly Expresses Displeasure Over Contractors’ Conduct on Projects Execution

The Kogi State House of Assembly has expressed displeasure over the conduct of some contractors handling various projects in the state.
This was contained in a resolution on the motion moved by the Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly and member representing Dekina Okura State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Hassan Abdullahi calling on the State Government to construct Anyigba township roads and drainage in the community.
Seconding the motion, the member representing Mopamuro Constituency, Hon. Obaro A.S Pedro commended the mover of the motion; stressing that Anyigba as the commercial centre of Kogi East Senatorial District and the host to the state University, need to be given urgent attention in the area of infrastructural development.
He appreciates the passionate call for Erosion Control by the Deputy Speaker.
He emphasized that erosion in Anyigba community is not only a threat to the students but farm land, stressing that priority attention needed to be given to the township roads.
While supporting the motion, Hon. Ododo Moses of Dekina-Biraidu State Constituency noted that Anyigba is the commercial centre of Kogi East and testified to the erosion menace in Ayingba, pointing out that whenever rain falls cars are always drowned in most areas in Dekina Local Government.
He also said Nigeria is the second producer of cashew nuts after Ivory Coast and Ayingba in Kogi State is the major producer of cashew nuts in Nigeria.
The Chief Whip, Hon. V.A. Omofaiye of Ijumu State Constituency supported the motion noting that although the said roads in the motion are already included in the State’s 2017 budget, and advised the mover of the motion to call the attention of the State’s Ministry of Environment because Federal Government usually come to the aid of States as regard erosion control.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Prince Kolawole while ruling, pleaded for additional prayers to the motion; that the State Government should look into the control of erosion in the State.
Secondly, that all paid contractors be published for the public to be abreast of the true position of things as regard execution of projects especially roads in the State.
He noted with emphasis that Kabba Township road is said to have been awarded during the previous administrations and about 80% of contract sum paid yet major roads in Kabba metropolis are not motorable.
He said the Sixth Assembly will not hesitate to expose erring contractors for prosecution. The mover of the motion had made a passionate appeal to the Executive Governor of Kogi State to direct relevant agencies of government to urgently attend to the ecological challenges presently confronting Anyigba community and that the House should direct its Committee on Works and Infrastructures to urgently carry out an on-the-spot assessment of the damages caused by erosion in Ayingba with a view to collaborate with the State Ministry of Works in proffering lasting solution.
