The Deputy Governor of Kogi, Mr Yomi Awoniyi, has said that Kano State Government has donated N10 million to complement the state’s efforts in rehabilitating flood victims.
This is contained in a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Mr Mike Abu, in Lokoja on Monday.
He said that the flood had devastated nine local government areas with three completely submerged.
He said that no fewer than 246,000 persons were displaced during the flood and that 83 camps were established for displaced persons.
Awoniyi, who announced that the camps had been reduced to nine, thanked the Federal Government for coming to the aid of the state during its trying moments.
The deputy governor also showered praises on Alhaji Aliko Dangote, another Kano State indigene, for his donation.
He noted that the state was at the verge of winding up its camps, adding that a technical assessment committee had been set up by government to assess damages.
According to him, the committee is also to determine appropriate assistance to be rendered to the displaced persons.
Awoniyi described the flood as a major challenge, added: “I assure you that the present administration is committed to prudent use of every donation it has received.’’
Earlier, his speech, the Kano State Gov. Dr Rabiu Kwankwanso, said that the donation was informed by the need to support the Kogi Government in the onerous task of resettling the affected victims.
He described Kogi as the worst hit state by the flood and commiserated with those who lost valuables and loved ones.
Kwankwanso explained that the displaced victims would be psychologically traumatised, noting that it was the responsibility of fellow Nigerians to help them in this time of need. (NAN)
